Nothing seems to be more important to start with when choosing a wedding dress than the fabric or the material that sets the designs, the styles, the theme, the patterns, the embroideries, the embellishments, the color and therefore the final aspect of the dress.

Silk is definitely one of the most common fabrics used in wedding dresses – mostly formal ones, and it embodies several blends of fabric recalled as the Duppioni silk, the Shantung silk, the China silk, the silk Mikado, the Gazar, the charmeuse, the duchess satin, the georgette, the illusion or the organza silk.

Batiste is a great material used for summer wedding dresses due to its light weight and its transparent and soft texture, feel and look. The chiffon fabric is also a transparent, delicate, soft and sheer fabric that is made form silk with additional rayon. This fabric is often used in creating sheer sleeves, necklines, wraps or overskirts. The illusion net fabric is also used in creation of sleeves and necklines because of the sheer, refined and soft texture.


Layered chiffon wedding dresses are the most popular ones featuring this fabric, where the layers are meant to gather the transparency of the fabric and hide it. The crepe fabric is special because of its crinkled surface and its softness. This material is very thin and light weighted.

Damask wedding dresses are also suitable for summer wedding days due to the light brocade design. The faille material is another interesting, unique and one of a kind fabric that can be defined as a structured substantial fabric finished in a grosgrain ribbon. Other types of fabrics used for wedding dresses are: gabardine, Jersey, Moire, Organdy, Peau de Soie, Bamboo, Pique, taffeta, tulle or velvet.

    I wonder how velvet can be transformed in a suitable fabric for a wedding dress. I can’t imagine it, maybe because i can’t imagine white velvet. For me velvet has to have a very dark color in order to be very beautiful. As for the other fabrics you talked about I totally agree with you that silk is one of the best fabrics fit for a wedding dress. And additionally I find lace yet another fabric that would look so good on a bride, although I would only wear lace instead of embroideries and other appliques. So maybe just for sleeves or the neckline, but not for the entire dress. And another fabric that I like and it’s simply amazing is, as you mentioned, chiffon. That’s what I am looking for too.
