The fashion before the war wasn’t too complicated because everything was limited by war rationing. We are talking here about food and clothing. Because of this a lot of brides in U.K and U.S.A had to wear normal practical dresses on their weddings, They didn’t have the opportunity to get married in something more special. In that time women use to borrow dresses from friends or they wore their best dresses on their wedding day.
They would wear anything they thought it would look good, anyway they didn’t have to many options. It might be hard for you to find 1940s wedding dress from before the war and to like them. These dresses might not even look like wedding dresses, but if you have any special connection with this period, you should definitely try hard to find the perfect 1940s wedding dress.
The second fashion period was amazingly changed. The brides had the chance to purchase used stylish wedding dresses or to get more elegant. Here are the design elements these dresses might have had:
- netting at and around the neckline
- they were made of silk sometimes but usually of rayon.
- the color was white, ivory, beige or off white
- the v shape was really popular
- the long sleeves were probably the most popular feature, combine with the V neck line

If this doesn’t make you smile, you have to go online. the internet it’s a great source for shopping. You should find a lot of online shops where you have great chances to find your 1940s wedding dress. Choosing a 1940s wedding dress for your wedding day might give you some problems as well. Authentic 1940s wedding dresses might not have been well preserved. Fading colors, yellowing, stains are the most popular problems regarding 1940s wedding dresses. Be sure you’ve seen the dress and you’ve tried it on before purchasing it.
If you chose to wear a 1940s wedding dress then you wedding theme has to be connected to the period, has to capture the essence of the era. Keep all the wedding in a line and bring the war into the picture if you want to. Some camo outfits won’t look bad at all. It’s your decision, so have a great wedding day!
I think that exactly the V neck line with the long sleeves is what makes me like the style of this decade. There is nothing else that I like, except these two and if I could find a dress that would have these two, the vintage air and yet be modern I would be more than happy. And for that I think I need to use a type of fabric that it would look modern but a cut that would give the dress the 40s style. I’m not into fashion too much but I once had the chance to wear such a dress and it looked pretty nice on me. And I never thought I looked good or pretty wearing a long dress. But with that one I really looked OK and it made me think of this style for my wedding.
